Participatory Approach to Environmental Conservation of the Muringato Catchment Area for Sustainable Management and Enhanced Ecosystem Health(CITGI4Muringato Project)

Project details:

The overall project objective aimed to incorporate a citizen participatory approach to environmental conservation of the Muringato sub-catchment area, for its sustainable management and enhanced ecosystem health by addressing some of the existing main challenges which include lack of proper water resource management, unsustainable logging, unchecked quarrying and agricultural activities. This was achieved through the following objectives:

Objective 1 : Development and implementation of GIS tools to simulate the sub catchment status and aid in sensitising the members on the need for conservation.

Objective 2 : Development and implementation of a crowd mapping platform through which the community can collect relevant data and transmit it, with the results being used for the mapping and monitoring of the sub catchment resources and activities

Objective 3 : Hydrological modelling based on Spatial land-use and land cover modelling and scenario-simulation within the catchment area. This will aid in the prediction of the future land use/ land cover trends, with the aim of sensitizing the community members and stakeholders on the need for the conservation sustainable use of the sub-catchment.
