EUDR Compliance Monitoring: A Web-GIS Solution for Muringato Catchment Coffee Farmers

Project details:

In recent decades the need for new legislative and technical tools to counter the main threats to the world’s forests has been increasingly felt. Currently, the European Union (EU) has moved towards the implementation of the new deforestation-free products Regulation (EUDR) which builds on the experience gained by Member States and EU institutions with the Regulation on timber trade. Ensuring compliance with the European Union Deforestation Regulations (EUDR) is crucial for maintaining access to the EU market for agricultural products, particularly coffee. Effective from 31st December 2025, these regulations require the collection and verification of geographic coordinates to confirm that commodities are not sourced from deforested areas. This study addressed these challenges by analyzing deforestation patterns and land use changes within target coffee farms for farmers’ EUDR adherence. These outcomes were also presented through a Web-GIS application that leverages Earth Engine API to assess farmers' compliance with EUDR in the Muringato Catchment. The application provides real-time, accurate data on land use changes and deforestation, leveraging the Earth Engine API for comprehensive monitoring.
